    February 6, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center

Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is a leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim, encompassing an international touring ballet company, a training school for ballet and the allied arts, and Dance Through Barriers, a celebrated arts education and community outreach program. The assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. compelled Arthur Mitchell, with his mentor Karel Shook, to start a school that would offer children--especially those in his native Harlem--the opportunity to challenge themselves and grow through the study of classical art form. Founded in 1969, DTH soon came to be known as "one of ballet's most exciting undertakings" (The New York Times, 1971). Now in its fifth decade, DTH has grown into a multi-cultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence that sets standards in the performing arts.

  22. "William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play" Encore Series at FHSU

    April 5, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center

While performing in England last summer, the Reduced Shakespeare Company uncovered a manuscript that turned out to be the literary Holy Grail: William Shakespeare's long lost first play! No, really. We found this centuries-old manuscript in a parking lot in Leicester, England. We are totally not making this up... Every famous character and Shakespeare plot device come together in a single story so comically outrageous it's no wonder the Bard of Avon hid it away. Historical evidence suggests that this manuscript, Shakespeare's very first written work, is so romantically rich, historically accurate, and theatrically overstuffed that in a stroke of genius The Bard decided to break it up into the thirty-seven plays (...or, depending on recent scholarship, 38...39...) that we know today as the Shakespearean canon.

  23. "Cinema Vivant" Encore Series at FHSU

April 25, 2018, 7:30 PM @ Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center

Cinema Vivant is a celebration of imagination and innovation. Before World War I, European filmmaker Ladislaw Starewicz pioneered stop-action animation, creating a never-before-seen movie experience. A gifted storyteller who used the new medium of animation to illuminate his fantastic imaginings of the secret lives of ordinary objects, Starewicz has become an obscure cult hero. Two Starewicz films are featured in Cinema Vivant--The Cameraman's Revenge, a charming piece about the marital troubles of beetles and The Mascot, an adventure story about lost toys. On the other side of the Atlantic, American Charley Bowers revolutionized the industry in the 1920's by combining animation with live action. There It Is, a recently rediscovered film by Bowers, is a whimsical comedy about a mysterious occurrence investigated by Scotland Yard.

    October 29, 2017, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center

Presenting a performance of "A Fairy Hallow’s Eve", an original musical drama by nationally-recognized playwright Catherine Trieschmann, with Erin Renard, Director Jonathan Lane, Guest Conductor. In this hilarious riff on Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, plumber-by-day and playwright-by-night Peter Quince and his friends attempt to rehearse a play for the Hays’ All Hallow’s Eve celebration. Limited talent, over-inflated egos, and a disturbed colony of fairies living in the forest lead to confusion and mayhem. Kids in the audience help create all kinds of mischief, until Peter Quince and Puck, leader of the fairies, decide to work together to bring the play to life. This delightful comedy is presented on stage with adult and youth actors from the region, with the Hays Symphony providing musical accompaniment from a host of great classical composers. Join us in your Halloween costumes for a joyful afternoon of story, song, theater and music for the whole family.

Presenting: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the FHSU Choirs and the Smoky Hill Chorale Dr. Terry Crull, conductor The FHSU Choirs and Smoky Hill Chorale take the stage with the Hays Symphony in a performance of the Carmina Burana, one of the most popular and frequently quoted pieces in the choral repertoire. This scenic cantata, based on 24 medieval poems, covers 13th century topics familiar to the modern-day listener: fate and fortune, the brevity of life, drinking, gluttony, gambling, lust, and the return of spring. Written in 1937, Orff’s masterpiece is a potent mix of Renaissance inspired melodies, colorful orchestration, and brutally percussive rhythms, at once barbaric and exultant. A memorable finale to the season! A pre-concert talk by Dr. Terry Crull will take place at 7:00pm. ¬

    November 29, 2017, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center

From bop to pop...the evolution of a sound! Three parts Jersey Boys, two parts Motown: The Musical and "your grandma's doo wop", these five charismatic, handsome, triple threat Broadway stars--with their hot 5-piece band--tear it up, with musicality, dancing and showmanship not found with any other group in the world! They "re-doo" classic Doo Wop songs from the '50s and 60's and make'em sound fresh and new...and they take contemporary pop hits by stars like Jason Mraz, Amy Winehouse, Adele and Maroon 5, and "doowopify" them! Perfect entertainment for people ages 10 to 100!
