    The Sternberg Museum is joining the City of Hay’s sesquicentennial celebration with a Summer Science Day! On Thursday July 20th from 10am until 2pm, the Museum will have special displays, presentations, and activities exploring the topic of WEATHER. Interact with Museum and FHSU scientists to learn about weather phenomena, the effects of weather on plants and animals, and the differences between weather and climate. There will be activities for all ages. No additional costs for special programming, but normal admission fees apply (so the event is free for members). Museum and exhibits are open all day, but special programming is from 10am to 2pm only, so don’t miss out! Join us as we celebrate Hays and science this summer!

    The seventh annual Free Spirit Run is being held in memory of Jordyn Claiborn, who was killed in a car accident September 11, 2009. All proceeds for the run will benefit the Free Spirit Award at Hays High and the Jordyn Claiborn Memorial Scholarship at the FHSU Herndon Clinic for Speech and Language. The run, is named in honor of the way Jordyn lived her life - Free. The Free Spirit Run will feature a 5K and 10K division as well as a "Free Spirit" division for those who want to make a contribution and set their own distance.

    The Sternberg Paleontology Camp is for students who seriously enjoy the great outdoors and paleontology! We will spend nine days exploring the paleontology and natural history of Kansas out in the field camping. Students will get to investigate the paleontology and ecology of ancient Kansas that once included forests of ferns, and a sea of sharks, flightless birds, and immense marine reptiles! Along the way, we will also visit a Miocene fossil site called Minium Quarry, famous for its prolific mammal and plant fossils. During fieldwork, students will learn how to find and collect fossil material as paleontologists do, using the same tools as professional researchers. Students will learn to take field notes, use GPS units, map and compass skills, and proper methods of fossil collection to preserve as much information as possible.
